Denton County Public Health on Wednesday said four new cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in Denton County, bringing the total number of cases to seven so far for on the year.
The four new cases occurred in Little Elm, Roanoke, Flower Mound and Fort Worth, county officials said. All four people were diagnosed with West Nile Virus Neuroinvasive Disease, a complication of West Nile infection that occurs in 1% of patients.
The new Denton County cases come one month after local county officials reported a death due to the virus. Dallas County has recorded 19 cases and one death this year, while Tarrant County as of Aug. 12 has recorded 28 cases and one death this year.
Denton County officials urged the public to take preventative measures to reduce mosquito breeding sites and use insect repellant. Officials advised residents in a news release to drain standing water in yards, dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside and to use EPA-registered repellant.
